In a concerted effort to curb dangerous driving and anti-social behaviour, police issued over 70 infringement notices following a traffic operation in the Hunter Valley last week.

The operation, conducted on Friday, 12 July 2024, saw the Newcastle-Hunter Highway Patrol team up with the Hunter Valley Police District, Northern Region, the Dog Unit, and Police Rescue. Their target: the Cessnock area, known for problematic driving behaviours.

The results of the operation were significant. A total of 103 Random Breath Tests (RBTs) were carried out, along with one Random Drug Test (RDT), which allegedly returned a positive result for cannabis.

In addition to these tests, officers issued 71 infringement notices and 23 defect notices, and suspended 2 licenses for various offences. The extensive operation underscores the police’s commitment to ensuring safer roads.

Newcastle-Hunter Highway Patrol Acting Inspector Glenn Swift highlighted the importance of road safety, encouraging people to enjoy their vehicles responsibly.

“Reckless driving and dangerous vehicles on our roads will not be tolerated,” A/Insp Swift stressed. “We will continue to conduct operations aimed at targeting those who endanger public safety.”

The police are urging anyone with information about dangerous driving to come forward. Reports can be made to Crime Stoppers at 1800 33 000, or to Triple-Zero (000) in emergencies.
