UNDER CONSTRUCTION: East End Village Revitalisation Moves into Phase 2

today20 August 2024

Background

The transformation of Newcastle’s East End Village has entered an exciting new phase, with work now underway on the second stage of the Hunter Street revitalisation. This next phase focuses on the section between Perkins and Brown Streets, serving as a key pedestrian and cyclist gateway into the revitalised East End.

The project, valued at approximately $1.9 million, will introduce new trees, enhanced landscaping, and significant upgrades to the underground services in the area. Current work involves realigning the road from Brown Street, with a priority on relocating utilities and improving the streetscape. Daracon, a well-regarded contractor in the region, has been awarded the tender for the next stage of works, which will extend the revitalisation to the stretch of Hunter Street between Thorn and Wolfe Streets, and Wolfe Street between King and Scott Streets.

Construction Update – Night Works at Brown Street

Night works have commenced in the Brown Street area, where crews are focused on updating critical infrastructure. These upgrades include an enhanced water main, improved stormwater management, modern lighting, and updated communication utilities. Adjustments to the kerb alignment in this zone are also scheduled as part of the works.

While pedestrian and vehicle access will be temporarily affected, traffic control and signage are in place to guide the public safely around the site. Access to businesses remains open, and efforts are being made to minimise disruptions during this busy period.

Phase 1 Success and Future Vision

Phase one of the East End Village revitalisation was completed in 2022 with a $5 million investment. This first stage focused on the block bounded by Hunter Street, Wolfe Street, King Street, and Perkins Street. The upgrade saw the introduction of new paving, lush landscaping, and enhanced public amenities in and around Hunter Street Mall, helping set the tone for the broader project’s goals.

Looking forward, designs for the next stages are already underway. Future upgrades include works on Laing Street and Market Street, with a possible Melbourne laneway-inspired development that could see Keightley Street closed to through traffic. The long-term vision for the East End Village is to restore Hunter Street as a traditional high street, filled with outdoor dining and boutique retail opportunities that appeal to both locals and visitors.

The City of Newcastle’s broader plans also include creating a Harbour to Cathedral view corridor, linking Christ Church Cathedral to Newcastle Harbour. This project aligns with the city’s goal of re-establishing the East End as a vibrant, connected community hub.
