Specialist Consultants Complete Assessment of Maitland Gaol In A Hope To Re-Open It

Specialist consultants have now finalised their assessment of Maitland Gaol, marking a crucial step toward safely reopening the heritage-listed site in East Maitland. Maitland City Council, which manages the 170-year-old site on behalf of the NSW Government, closed the gaol earlier this year after discovering significant electrical and fire safety issues during an independent safety review.

The consultant reports, expected to be reviewed in the coming weeks, will guide Council officers in developing a detailed remediation plan, including a timeline and budget for necessary repairs. A report is anticipated to be presented to Councillors by the end of the year.

Maitland City Council’s General Manager, Jeff Smith, stated, “The closure decision wasn’t taken lightly, but the safety of our staff and visitors remains paramount.” The Council is also engaging with the NSW Government regarding potential funding for the repair works.

The gaol, which closed as a functioning correctional facility in 1998, holds significant historical value. Constructed in the mid-1800s, it was once a key component of the NSW prison system and housed infamous criminals like Ivan Milat. The site has since been repurposed as a tourist attraction, offering tours and events until its recent closure.

While the gaol remains closed, its permanent staff have been temporarily reassigned, and alternative arrangements are being made for community groups that previously used the facility. Although no reopening date has been set, the Council assures the community that finding a path forward is a priority.
