A 40-year-old man is set to appear in Raymond Terrace Local Court today following his arrest in connection with alleged firearm offences near Newcastle.
Around 6:30am yesterday, officers from the Proactive Crime Team of Port Stephens-Hunter Police District, alongside Federal Environmental Officers, executed a search warrant at a property on Nelson Bay Road in Williamtown. The warrant was part of an investigation into the exportation of native birds.
Upon arrival, the man allegedly attempted to flee the scene but was quickly apprehended. During a search, police reportedly located and seized a firearm in his possession.
A further search of the property led to the discovery of a significant arsenal, including 49 unregistered handguns, 14 unregistered rifles and shotguns, ammunition, firearm parts, drugs, and chemicals suspected to be used in the manufacture of gunpowder. Authorities also seized silver bullion and a quantity of cash.
The man was taken to Raymond Terrace Police Station, where he was charged with 96 offences. These include possessing an unauthorised pistol, failing to safely store a firearm, possessing unregistered firearms, and possessing goods suspected of being stolen.
He was refused bail and will appear in court today to face the charges.
