The NSW Government has revealed updated design plans for the Cessnock Hospital Redevelopment, a $138 million project aimed at expanding and modernising healthcare services for the local community. Residents are encouraged to provide feedback on these new designs at upcoming information sessions.
The hospital redevelopment will feature a new two-storey acute services building, which will include an expanded emergency department, additional inpatient wards with private bathrooms, advanced medical imaging facilities, and dedicated spaces for day surgeries. As part of the 2024-25 NSW Budget, an additional $26.5 million has been allocated to enhance the project, bringing the total funding to $138 million.
Key updates include a new operating theatre, a procedure room, a modernised pharmacy, and a Central Sterilising Services Department (CSSD) to support expanded services. These improvements aim to meet the healthcare needs of a growing Cessnock population and surrounding Lower Hunter communities.
Community members are invited to attend one of two drop-in sessions to view the designs, ask questions, and share their feedback:
NSW Minister for Regional Health, Ryan Park, highlighted the importance of community input in shaping the hospital’s future. “This redevelopment will greatly enhance healthcare delivery in Cessnock, from expanded emergency services to modernised patient wards. We want the community to be an active part of this design phase.”
The redevelopment team will also consult with local groups to incorporate cultural elements into the Arts in Health program and outdoor spaces, ensuring the hospital reflects Cessnock’s unique identity. Construction is set to begin in 2025, with a main contractor to be appointed soon.
Member for Cessnock, Clayton Barr, encouraged residents to attend the information sessions. “This project is a pivotal moment for our community. We welcome everyone to join the conversation about what our new hospital should offer.”
