In a bid to bolster equitable access to renewable energy across Newcastle, City of Newcastle’s Labor councillors have put forward a motion to expand the city’s renewable energy programs. With a focus on reducing carbon emissions and supporting community electrification, the motion introduces a new “Community Renewable Energy Bulk Buy” initiative, encouraging residents to invest in clean energy solutions through collective purchasing options.

The proposal, set for discussion at Tuesday’s council meeting, aims to make renewable energy more affordable for Newcastle residents through bulk purchasing of solar panels, batteries, and electric vehicle (EV) chargers. By pooling community demand, the city hopes to reduce individual costs, making these technologies accessible to a broader demographic. The program includes financing options that cater to a variety of housing types, ensuring renters, owner-occupiers, and strata residents all have pathways to sustainable energy solutions.

Labor Councillor Declan Clausen highlighted Newcastle’s history of progressive climate action, noting that the City was the first in NSW to power its operations with 100% renewable energy back in January 2020. He remarked, “This initiative is a natural progression in our commitment to supporting the wider community in transitioning to renewable energy. We want to ensure that everyone, regardless of housing type or income, can access these benefits.”

The new initiative aligns with Newcastle’s Empowering Newcastle climate action program, launched in July, which prioritises net-zero emissions for the city by 2040. Councillor Dr Elizabeth Adamczyk spoke on the importance of an inclusive approach, stating, “Households most affected by rising energy costs and extreme weather often have fewer resources to invest in clean energy. By offering options like virtual power plants and community battery schemes, we aim to support those who need it most.”

Additionally, the council is investigating opportunities for community energy-sharing platforms, retrofitting programs, and other tools to further enhance energy access. This motion seeks to reduce financial, environmental, and public health disparities associated with energy costs, especially for those in older homes with higher energy demands.

Through this program, City of Newcastle continues to lead the way in local climate resilience and innovation. With tenders open until 19 November 2024, the council invites local providers to participate in building Newcastle’s renewable future. This initiative, which has drawn on insights from similar programs in other Australian councils, will shape Newcastle’s approach to an inclusive and sustainable energy transition for all residents.
