Maitland Private Hospital has officially opened its state-of-the-art $15 million Maitland Cancer Centre, a significant expansion designed to serve the growing healthcare needs of the local community. The new centre, which more than doubles the capacity of the previous unit, is set to provide enhanced care for oncology patients across the Hunter Valley, with the added benefit of creating 20 full-time positions for nursing and support staff.
This major development includes consulting rooms for medical and radiation oncology, along with spaces for surgical consultations and infusion treatments. Day and night infusions will be supported by an expert critical care team, with an Intensive Care Unit available on-site for additional patient support.
The new Maitland Cancer Centre features a modern design and is equipped with the latest technologies, including scalp cooling devices aimed at reducing hair loss during chemotherapy. The facility also offers views of the surrounding area and additional on-site parking to improve patient and visitor convenience.
Dr. Rob Paterson, Director of the Maitland Cancer Centre, shared his enthusiasm for the new facility: “This upgraded centre brings not only more chairs and larger support areas but also advanced technologies that enhance comfort for our patients. We are thrilled to provide a local, modern facility that matches the high standard of care our community deserves.”
The recent expansion didn’t stop at cancer services. The Barrington Clinic, a private mental health unit within Maitland Private Hospital, has also been significantly enlarged. An additional 24 beds bring the facility’s capacity to 68 inpatients, and the upgraded unit includes therapeutic spaces, sensory rooms, and a private outdoor terrace, providing a supportive environment for patients undergoing mental health treatments.
Peter Cizzio, CEO of Maitland Private Hospital, highlighted the importance of these developments: “These new cancer and mental health facilities will provide residents in Maitland and the broader Hunter Valley with high-quality care close to home, reducing the need for travel and ensuring timely access to essential treatments.”
Both the Maitland Cancer Centre and the expanded Barrington Clinic are now fully operational and accepting referrals from insured and self-funded patients, marking a milestone in the region’s healthcare landscape.
