Lake Macquarie City Council has marked a successful year of accomplishments and forward momentum, as showcased in its 2023-24 Annual Report, presented during last night’s Council meeting. Mayor Adam Shultz praised the city’s achievements, which have strengthened local infrastructure, community engagement, and sustainability efforts.
In the past financial year, Lake Macquarie has attracted nearly 900,000 attendees to Council events and local facilities, reinforcing its reputation as a thriving hub of community activity. Among the highlights are the new extension of the Fernleigh Awabakal Shared Track and the completion of the Windale Hub, bilyabayi, a long-anticipated community facility for residents.
“We’ve continued to support a diverse array of events and projects that reflect the heart of our community,” Shultz said. “From the Living Smart Festival celebrating sustainability to the exhilarating Fast and Loud superboats event, our commitment remains firm in providing engaging experiences for all of Lake Mac.”
Council’s financial health was a key focus, with the annual financial statements showing a $4.1 million surplus—well above the initial forecast of $1.3 million. This robust financial position is attributed to careful fiscal planning and successful grant applications, allowing Council to progress major projects while maintaining stability.
The Annual Report also highlights several environmental and sustainability initiatives, including the Slatey Creek flood mitigation works in Barnsley and a successful construction pollution awareness campaign across the city.
Council has also increased its regional influence through appointments to 14 external committees, including the Hunter Sports Centre Advisory Board and the Eraring Power Station Community Forum. Additionally, councillors approved a Planning Agreement for a new residential subdivision in Edgeworth, which includes biodiversity offsets and designates protected ecological areas in Teralba.
Accessibility and inclusivity remain at the forefront of Council’s agenda. Projects like the city’s first fully accessible fishing platform at Bolton Point and the Glendale Croquet Centre for national-level recreation are designed to ensure that all residents have welcoming spaces to enjoy. These initiatives align with Council’s community engagement approach, gathering resident input on city planning and improvements.
With plans to deliver $111.5 million in capital works for the 2024-25 year, Council is set to bring new infrastructure upgrades, including comprehensive road rehabilitations and the expansion of community playgrounds. Projects like the North West Catalyst Area’s development aim to foster economic growth while supporting Lake Macquarie’s rising population.
The Annual Report, along with the 2021-24 State of our City Report, is available for public viewing on Council’s website and at all Lake Mac Libraries.
