Lake Macquarie teenager Emma Walsh’s heartfelt initiative to help young hospital patients has received a boost from Newcastle Permanent employees, who have raised over $22,000 to support Emma’s charity, Emma’s Warriors. This funding will provide 70 thoughtfully crafted care kits designed to offer comfort and entertainment to young people enduring long hospital stays.

The charity was born from Emma’s own journey after her 2022 leukaemia diagnosis, where she recognised the need for items that could alleviate the stress of hospital life. Now 13, Emma is using her experiences to make hospital stays a bit brighter for others.

“I spent so much time in hospital, and small comforts helped me feel better,” Emma shared. “I created these care kits with everything that made a difference for me, hoping they can do the same for other teens and tweens.”

Each kit, valued at $300, comes in a backpack stocked with an Amazon Fire Stick, Yeti cup, white noise machine, bath towel, bed sheets, lip balm, fairy lights, room spray, an Uber Eats gift card, and moisturiser. The carefully chosen items are aimed at providing comfort and helping young patients personalise their hospital space.

Emma expressed her gratitude towards Newcastle Permanent employees, who selected her charity as one of their causes for the year. “I’m so thankful for this support,” Emma said. “It’s amazing knowing that my kits will now reach more kids who need them.”

Kate Steele, Newcastle Permanent’s Customer Relations Specialist, said the decision to support Emma’s Warriors was unanimous among employees. “I was moved by Emma’s courage and her thoughtful approach to helping others,” Ms Steele said. “When I called to share the news about our donation, Emma’s excitement was contagious, and we’re thrilled to know our contribution will fund 70 care kits.”

Emma’s Warriors currently distributes kits to patients at the John Hunter Hospital and directly to families, with plans to expand into other hospitals, including Calvary Mater Newcastle, Maitland, and the Central Coast.
