Background

Newcastle Airport’s Chief Executive Officer, Peter Cock, has announced he will be stepping down from his role in the New Year, marking the end of a decade of transformative leadership. Appointed in 2014, Cock has driven the regional airport’s growth into a bustling hub that now supports over 5,700 jobs and contributes more than $1.16 billion annually to the NSW economy.

Under Cock’s guidance, Newcastle Airport rose from a modest regional facility to become one of Australia’s most sustainable airports, achieving a sixfold increase in valuation to reach $430 million. The airport’s recent “topping out” ceremony for the new International Terminal highlights its evolution into a key player in regional aviation, capable of connecting the Hunter region to the world.

Reflecting on his tenure, Cock expressed pride in the strides Newcastle Airport has made. “It has been a privilege to lead this incredible team,” he stated. “The growth and transformation we’ve achieved has set Newcastle Airport on a path for continued success, and I leave knowing it is poised for even greater growth.”

Jude Munro AO, Chair of the Newcastle Airport Board, praised Cock’s leadership, noting his instrumental role in launching the Astra Aerolab project, a development initiative valued at $200 million. Munro affirmed the Board’s commitment to maintaining the momentum, with plans underway to recruit a new CEO ready to lead the next phase of development and international route expansion.

The recruitment for Cock’s successor comes at an exciting time for Newcastle Airport as it aims to strengthen its impact on regional economic growth, enhance its workplace, and invest in cutting-edge technology.
