Hunter residents are being encouraged to attend upcoming events as part of the annual Get Ready Weekend, where Rural Fire Brigades will offer essential education and practical tips on protecting properties from bushfires. These events, scheduled at various locations across the region, aim to equip locals with the knowledge they need to reduce the risk to their homes as bushfire season approaches.

Senior Bushfire Officer for Lake Macquarie City Council, Jasmine Starkey, stressed the importance of early preparation and having a clear bushfire survival plan.

“Bushfire danger can escalate quickly with just a few days of hot, dry, and windy weather. Taking action now is key to safeguarding your home and family,” Ms Starkey said.

“This year’s early incidents, driven by stronger winds and rising Spring temperatures, serve as a timely reminder for everyone to remain alert. Get Ready Weekend is an opportunity to fine-tune your plan and better manage your property ahead of the season.”

Events will be held at local Rural Fire Brigade stations, Bunnings stores, and other public areas throughout Lake Macquarie. Attendees will receive valuable information about creating a Bush Fire Survival Plan, maintaining defensible spaces around their homes, and understanding the new Fire Danger Ratings.

Some practical steps residents are encouraged to take in the lead-up to bushfire season include:

  • Discussing a plan with family members for what to do in the event of a bushfire.
  • Preparing properties by clearing gutters of leaves and twigs, trimming trees and shrubs around buildings, maintaining lawns, and ensuring hoses can reach all parts of the house.
  • Familiarising themselves with the different bushfire alert levels.
  • Keeping important emergency contacts, websites, and the Hazards Near Me app easily accessible.
