Five teenagers have been charged following an alleged early-morning police pursuit in Newcastle.
Just after 3am today, officers from Newcastle City Police District attempted to stop a Hyundai i30 on Parkway Avenue, Cooks Hill, after the vehicle was flagged as stolen. When the car allegedly failed to stop, police initiated a pursuit through multiple suburbs.
The chase came to an end on Industrial Drive, Mayfield West, where the vehicle stopped, and five teens fled on foot. Police apprehended all five at the scene after a brief foot pursuit.
The driver, a 14-year-old boy, allegedly returned a positive breath test of 0.105. He has been charged with police pursuit – not stop – drive dangerously, driving a stolen vehicle, and driving with a middle-range prescribed concentration of alcohol (PCA).
A 17-year-old boy has been charged with being carried in a stolen vehicle, while another 16-year-old boy faces charges of breaching bail, possessing a knife in a public place, and being carried in a stolen vehicle. The two older boys were granted strict conditional bail and are scheduled to appear before a children’s court on Wednesday, 30 October 2024.
The 16-year-old was refused bail and is set to appear in court today (Thursday, 19 September 2024).
A 16-year-old boy and a 17-year-old girl, both passengers in the vehicle, were dealt with under the Young Offenders Act.
