Deputy Captain Robert Leach of the Dora Creek Rural Fire Brigade has marked an extraordinary milestone, celebrating over 35 years of service to the NSW Rural Fire Service (NSW RFS) and the local community. A second-generation firefighter, Leach’s dedication and leadership have cemented his status as a key figure in the brigade, recently earning him life membership.
Starting his firefighting journey under the influence of his father and uncle, both of whom also served in the NSWRFS, Leach initially joined the brigade as a way to give back to his community. “It was in my blood,” Leach reflected. “My old man and my uncle were both firefighters, so I thought I’d give it a go. It’s been a rewarding way to contribute.”
Over the past three decades, Leach has seen countless challenges, but two moments stand out as particularly memorable. “The Pasha Bulka storms were something I’ll never forget. I spent more than 36 hours in flood waters, helping with rescues,” he said. “And, of course, my eight years as Captain, where we opened a new station for the brigade, which still serves as a proud reminder of that time.”
Leach attributes much of his passion for the role to the camaraderie within the brigade. “It’s like a family here,” he shared. “Even if the work was tough, the friendships and the atmosphere made it worth it. These people are more than colleagues – they’re family.”
For anyone considering joining the RFS, Leach offers simple advice: “Just give it a go. Even if it’s not for you, you’ll have gained valuable experience and likely made a few new friends.”
Leach will be available to chat with community members during the brigade’s Get Ready Weekend this Sunday at the Dora Creek station. It’s an opportunity for locals to meet their local heroes and learn more about volunteering.
Congratulations to Deputy Captain Robert Leach on his outstanding contribution. His commitment to the Dora Creek community is a testament to his unwavering dedication. Here’s to many more years of service.
