Daring Water Rescue at Boat Harbour as Man Swept From Rocks

today18 September 2024

Background

A dramatic rescue unfolded at Boat Harbour, near Port Stephens, on Tuesday, 17 September 2024, when two young men were swept off the rocks by strong surf conditions.

Emergency services were called to the scene at approximately 4pm, after reports emerged that the pair, both in their 20s, had encountered trouble while rock fishing. One of the men managed to make his way back to shore, but his companion was left struggling in the water.

The Westpac Rescue Helicopter, tasked by NSW Ambulance, arrived swiftly, deploying its critical care paramedic to perform a high-risk rescue. The paramedic winched the remaining man from the surf and brought him safely into the helicopter.

The helicopter landed nearby where the rescue team and local paramedics provided immediate medical assistance to both men. Fortunately, they suffered only minor injuries, including cuts and bruises, and neither required further hospital treatment.

The incident serves as a reminder of the dangers of rock fishing and unpredictable ocean conditions along the NSW coast.

Local authorities have issued a warning to fishermen and beachgoers to remain vigilant, particularly as Port Stephens continues to experience hazardous surf conditions this week.
