Newcastle Museum is preparing to launch a prehistoric journey through time with the world premiere of Dinosaurs: Surviving Extinction. This groundbreaking exhibition, which is set to debut on Saturday, 28 September, promises an immersive experience as it showcases the fascinating story of dinosaurs and their fight for survival during the Cretaceous period.
The exhibition, created by Gondwana Studios, will feature over 100 exhibits, including skeletons, fossils, interactive dig pits, and hands-on displays. Visitors can explore the connection between ancient dinosaurs and modern-day birds, with the exhibition tracing the evolutionary path from raptors to creatures like rosellas.
Julie Baird, Director of Museum, Archive, Libraries & Learning at the City of Newcastle, expressed her excitement about bringing this exclusive exhibition to Newcastle.
“Dinosaurs: Surviving Extinction is a unique opportunity for families and visitors of all ages to come face-to-face with creatures from 145 million years ago. The exhibition not only focuses on the extinction of many dinosaurs but also tells the remarkable story of how some evolved into the birds we see today,” Ms Baird said.
“Our museum has become known for delivering world-class exhibitions, and this one will be no different. From baby dinosaurs to full-grown predators, the scale and variety of what’s on offer are sure to captivate everyone who visits.”
Visitors can expect to see life-sized skeletons, including a towering nine-metre apex predator, and learn about lesser-known dinosaurs such as the feathered Utahraptor and the Tarbosaurus, a cousin of the infamous T-Rex. Replica dinosaur nests, fossils, and dig pits will also give aspiring palaeontologists the chance to experience the thrill of discovery.
“This exhibition is timed perfectly for the school holidays, making it the ideal outing for families,” Ms Baird added. “We are proud to offer our local community and visitors from around the world the chance to be the first to see this incredible display before it tours elsewhere.”
The exhibition will run from 28 September 2024 until 2 March 2025. Tickets will be available for purchase online from 20 September, with prices starting at $7.50 for children, $15 for adults, and $40 for families of four.
