A bushfire broke out late Thursday night, 19 September 2024, at the old Gretley Colliery site near Wallsend, sending emergency crews into action. Around 10:30 pm, Wallsend Fire Rescue responded to reports of a fire along Bulkara Street, within the boundaries of the former colliery, a site known for its dense bushland and historic mining activity.

Due to the challenging location and potential risk to surrounding areas, Fire and Rescue NSW Station 498 Holmesville and Cameron Park Rural Fire Brigade were swiftly called in to assist Wallsend crews. Firefighters worked through the night, successfully extinguishing the blaze.

Shortly after this initial fire was contained, crews were alerted to another fire breaking out behind homes on Gunambi Street, also in Wallsend. Crews quickly attended the scene, with assistance from local residents, to bring the second fire under control before it could spread further into residential areas.

Residents are being urged to remain vigilant as the summer fire season approaches. Authorities remind the community to report any signs of smoke or fire immediately by contacting 000.

With conditions set to become hotter and drier, the quick response from the fire crews has raised concerns about increased bushfire risks in the region.Bush Fire Erupts at Old Gretley Colliery, Wallsend
