today29 August 2024

Background

Emergency services rushed to Cessnock Airport after a light aircraft crash landed through a fence on Thursday afternoon, leaving the pilot with multiple injuries.

The incident occurred around 12:15 pm when the plane, carrying two people, experienced difficulties during landing. The male pilot, in his 50s, lost control of the aircraft, leading to a heavy landing that resulted in the plane skidding off the runway and crashing into a nearby fence.

Emergency crews, including paramedics and firefighters, were quickly on the scene. The pilot was extricated from the wreckage and transported to John Hunter Hospital for treatment. Although his injuries are serious, they are not considered life-threatening.

The female passenger, who was also on board, sustained a minor leg injury but declined treatment from paramedics.

Local authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the crash, with initial reports suggesting that a gust of wind may have played a role in the plane’s loss of control during the landing. Cessnock Airport has reported the incident to the Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) for further assessment.

Despite the accident, Cessnock Airport remains open, with flights continuing as scheduled. A salvage operation is currently underway to remove the damaged aircraft from the scene, and safety measures have been implemented to secure the area.

Further updates are expected as the investigation progresses, and authorities work to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the crash.
