Emergency services were alerted at approximately 4:35 am today after reports emerged of a vehicle on fire along Nelson Bay Road in Williamtown. Upon arrival, officers from the Port Stephens-Hunter Police District discovered that a vehicle had collided with a utility pole before catching fire.
It is believed that the driver of the vehicle fled the scene before police arrived. Authorities are actively investigating the incident, and anyone with information or dashcam footage is encouraged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
Ausgrid has been notified and has started repairs on the damaged utility pole. The southbound lanes of Nelson Bay Road will remain closed for several hours as police continue their investigation.
Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes, including Cabbage Tree Road and Tomago Road, between the Pacific Highway and Newcastle Airport. For real-time traffic updates, please visit the Live Traffic NSW website.
The Williamtown/Salt Ash Rural Fire Brigade also responded to the scene, with fire crews working to extinguish the blaze. As of 6:50 am, the fire crews had departed, while police, Traffic Management Centre personnel, and Ausgrid remain at the site to manage the ongoing situation.
Motorists are urged to stay updated on the road closures and consider using alternative routes.
