Police have charged a 40-year-old man following an alleged fail-to-stop crash at Nords Wharf that left a 42-year-old cyclist dead. Emergency services were called about 11am on Sunday, 14 December 2025, to the intersection of the Pacific Highway and Awabakal Drive after reports a cyclist and an SUV had collided, with the cyclist taken to John Hunter Hospital in a critical condition before dying on Monday, 15 December 2025. After inquiries, officers attended an address on Rusty Lane at Branxton, where a Toyota FJ Cruiser was seized for forensic examination and the man was arrested and taken to Cessnock Police Station, charged with dangerous driving occasioning death (drive manner dangerous) and negligent driving (occasioning death). He was granted conditional bail to appear at Belmont Local Court on Wednesday, 14 January 2026.

Police issued an updated appeal on Tuesday, calling for dashcam footage as investigators try to identify the driver of a black Toyota believed to have been involved.
Emergency services were called about 11am to the intersection of the Pacific Highway and Awabakal Drive after reports of a crash between a cyclist and a sports utility vehicle (SUV).
Officers from Lake Macquarie Police District attended and were told the cyclist and the SUV had collided.
NSW Ambulance paramedics treated the man at the scene before he was taken to John Hunter Hospital in a critical condition.
Police said the vehicle, believed to be a black Toyota FJ Cruiser, did not stop after the collision.
A crime scene was established and Crash Investigation Unit officers began inquiries into the circumstances of the crash.
In an earlier statement on Sunday, police described the cyclist as a man in his 40s and the vehicle as a black Toyota SUV, with traffic significantly affected along the Pacific Highway in both directions during the investigation.
Police said the cyclist died in hospital about 9.50am on Monday 15 December 2025 and urged anyone with information or relevant dashcam footage to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
