newy.com.au – Hunter businesses looking to expand into Southeast Asia will be offered market advice and direct accounts from local exporters at a free NSW government forum in Newcastle on Thursday, August 27.
The ASEAN Market Update will cover export opportunities in Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. Market experts will discuss regional trends and opportunities for particular industries, while Hunter companies already operating overseas will share their experiences.
Four Hunter businesses will take part: Port Stephens beef producer Macka’s Australian Black Angus, Newcastle geospatial technology company Anditi, Tamburlaine Organic Wines and Gateshead fuel-management technology company Banlaw.
Anditi managing director Peter Jamieson said the company had recently worked with partners in Vietnam, using data and artificial intelligence to identify high-risk school zones and improve road safety.
“Our team has recently worked alongside international partners in Vietnam, using advanced data and AI technologies to help identify high-risk school zones and improve road safety outcomes. Experiences like this demonstrate the appetite across Southeast Asia for Australian expertise and innovation,” Mr Jamieson said.
“Many businesses in the Hunter already have world-class capabilities. The challenge is often understanding where the opportunities are and how to access them.”
The state government says rising incomes, urbanisation, industrialisation and digital adoption are expected to make Southeast Asia the world’s fourth-largest economy by 2040. It has identified advanced manufacturing, food and beverage, clean technology, mining equipment, technology and professional services as Hunter industries with export potential.
The Newcastle event is part of a series also being held in Western Sydney, the Illawarra, Northern Rivers and Riverina. It follows the government’s announcement of refreshed export workshops and 30 export programs and trade missions planned for 2026-27.
Hunter Minister Yasmin Catley said bringing the event to Newcastle would allow businesses to seek advice and contacts without travelling outside the region.
“Bringing this event to Newcastle means local businesses can get the advice and connections they need here in the region, so more Hunter companies can explore new customers, new partnerships and new growth opportunities across Southeast Asia,” she said.
