The long-anticipated route for the Newcastle Future Transit Corridor has been confirmed, setting a clear path between the Newcastle Interchange and Broadmeadow via Tudor Street. The corridor will be preserved to support future transport development and ease of access in the growing region.

Transport for NSW announced the decision following detailed studies and a round of public consultation tied to the Hunter Strategic Regional Integrated Transport Plan, which wrapped up on 28 February 2025.

Anna Zycki, Regional Director at Transport for NSW, said the move was an essential step in shaping Newcastle’s transport future. “Securing this corridor is about making sure our infrastructure keeps up with Newcastle’s expanding population and evolving transport demands,” she said. “By locking in the route now, we can offer greater planning certainty for residents, businesses, and future developments.”

The corridor forms part of broader plans for the Broadmeadow precinct, which is forecast to welcome up to 40,000 new residents, with 20,000 homes and around 15,000 jobs expected to emerge over coming decades. The intent is to ensure infrastructure keeps pace with this growth.

A segment of the corridor, closest to the Newcastle Interchange, will be safeguarded under a separate designation by the Department of Planning, Housing and Infrastructure (DPHI), known as the Newcastle Future Infrastructure Corridor. Further information on this is currently on public exhibition and can be found via Transport for NSW’s website.

Locals keen to learn more or ask questions in person can visit the Transport for NSW office at 6 Stewart Avenue, Newcastle West, between 11.00am and 1.00pm on Thursday, 3 April 2025.
