Background

A Newcastle man has been charged in connection with stolen property, including a 2024 NRLW Premiership ring owned by Millie Elliott, after an extensive police investigation.

Police were alerted to a break and enter at a property on Rowan Crescent, Merewether, at about 5am on Saturday, 12 October 2024. Several items were reportedly taken, including handbags, bank cards, cash, and the valuable championship ring.

Detectives from the Newcastle City Police District began inquiries into the incident. On Wednesday, 16 October 2024, officers executed a search warrant at a property in Hamilton South. They seized several items believed to have been stolen during the break-in; however, the Premiership ring was not among them.

A 24-year-old man was arrested during the search and later charged with multiple offences, including aggravated break and enter, dishonestly obtaining a financial advantage, and other serious indictable offences. He was refused bail and appeared before Newcastle Local Court on 16 October 2024, with a subsequent court date set for 11 December 2024.

The case took another turn on Friday, 8 November 2024, when police received a tip-off about the missing ring from a Newcastle business. Officers retrieved the ring and continued their investigation.

On Thursday, 14 November 2024, a 37-year-old man was arrested on Hunter Street, Newcastle, for allegedly receiving stolen property. He was taken to Newcastle Police Station, charged, and later appeared in Newcastle Local Court. He was granted strict conditional bail and is set to reappear on Thursday, 9 January 2025.

Investigations into the incident remain ongoing.
