Background

newy.com.au – Lake Macquarie is set to see significant road improvements over the next five years, thanks to a $15.4 million funding injection from the Albanese Government under the Roads to Recovery (RTR) program. This boost, which includes a $6.6 million increase specifically for Lake Macquarie City Council, aims to support a range of infrastructure projects across the Shortland and Hunter electorates, enhancing road safety and quality in the region.

The RTR funds will prioritise vital projects such as the rehabilitation of Elizabeth Parade in Charlestown, where roadworks will also include new footpaths and drainage improvements, totalling $3.7 million. Additionally, Gardiner Road in Dora Creek will undergo a full road and drainage replacement, enhancing both accessibility and safety. These projects are part of a larger commitment by the Albanese Government to progressively double RTR funding, ultimately reaching $1 billion annually to address local road needs nationwide.

This funding boost aligns with the government’s broader initiatives to improve local infrastructure, including increasing the Road Black Spot program to $150 million per year and introducing the $200 million Safer Local Roads and Infrastructure Program. These initiatives are designed to support councils in meeting the demands of growing communities and enhancing the safety of local transport networks.

Minister for Regional Development Kristy McBain praised the collaboration with Lake Macquarie City Council, noting that “working together ensures better outcomes for our communities.” Local representatives, including Member for Shortland Pat Conroy and Member for Hunter Dan Repacholi, also highlighted the economic and social benefits of these upgrades, emphasising their potential to boost jobs, improve liveability, and provide safer, more reliable roads for residents.

Mayor Adam Shultz welcomed the RTR funding, underscoring the council’s commitment to advancing critical road upgrades that will benefit both locals and visitors. He noted that projects like those on Elizabeth Parade and Gardiner Road are crucial for building a better future for Lake Macquarie, adding that the council will continue to work closely with the community to identify and address key infrastructure needs.
