In Wallsend, a 24-year-old woman has been charged following an alleged assault that left an elderly man in critical condition.
Emergency services were called to Raglan Street around 12:55 pm on Sunday, 10 November 2024, after reports of an assault involving an elderly man. According to police reports, the woman allegedly struck the 81-year-old man with an object, causing him to fall onto the road. Paramedics from NSW Ambulance attended to the man at the scene before transporting him to John Hunter Hospital, where he remains in a critical state.
The alleged attacker fled the scene before police arrived. Newcastle City Police District initiated Strike Force Pinnaroo to track down the suspect, leading them back to Raglan Street. On Monday, 11 November 2024, detectives executed a search warrant at a unit on the same street, reportedly seizing clothing and a ream of paper believed to be linked to the incident.
The woman was arrested and charged with reckless grievous bodily harm. She was denied bail and appeared before Newcastle Local Court on Wednesday, 13 November 2024. The court refused her bail, and she is scheduled to reappear on Wednesday, 27 November 2024.
