Emergency Sewer Repairs to Close A15 Donald Street in Hamilton Until 23rd Nov

today13 November 2024

Background

newy.com.au – Emergency sewer repairs are set to begin on Donald Street, Hamilton, starting TODAY, Wednesday, 13 November 2024 until 23 November 2024. A collapsed sewer main near 19 Donald Street has prompted urgent repairs, with works expected to last up to 10 days, dependent on favourable weather. The westbound lanes between Lawson and Beaumont Streets will be closed to facilitate excavation and replacement of about 15 metres of damaged sewer infrastructure.

The repair process involves significant excavation, using heavy machinery to dig a pit approximately 25 metres long, 5 metres wide, and 6 metres deep. Along with repairing the collapsed sewer main, other nearby sewer mains will be relined to ensure stability. A temporary bypass line installed along Eva Street will be relocated to the southern side of Donald Street once work begins.

For nearby residents, there may be noise, dust, vibrations, and occasional odours throughout the project. Disruptive activities like road cutting and sheet piling will occur early in the schedule, from 13 to 16 November, with a 24/7 work schedule aimed at completing the repairs as quickly as possible. Measures will be in place to minimise disruption, such as scheduling noisy activities during daylight hours and using acoustic barriers and non-tonal reversing beepers.

Traffic disruptions are expected throughout the emergency works, with full westbound closures on Donald Street between Lawson and Beaumont Streets. Light vehicles will be diverted via Lawson, Cleary, Beaumont, and Samdon Streets, while heavy vehicles will be directed to longer alternative routes, including Stewart Avenue and the Pacific Highway. Reduced speed limits and traffic controllers will assist with safe navigation through the area.

Hunter Water is undertaking these repairs to mitigate wastewater overflow risks and keep the network functioning efficiently. Motorists are advised to allow an extra 5 minutes of travel time and to follow the directions of onsite traffic controllers.
