Charlotte McCabe Named as Greens Candidate for Federal Newcastle Seat

Background

Charlotte McCabe, a well-known Newcastle City Councillor and environmental advocate, has been announced as the Greens’ candidate for the federal seat of Newcastle in the upcoming election. Ms McCabe, standing alongside Australian Greens Deputy Leader Senator Mehreen Faruqi, revealed her vision to address pressing issues like housing affordability, the cost of living crisis, and climate change.

McCabe’s campaign is built on promises of practical action, aiming to challenge what she calls the Labor Party’s inadequate response to these critical matters. With a growing profile in the community, she previously contested the seat in 2022, achieving a significant 4.5% swing in the primary vote, setting a record for the Greens in Newcastle.

“I am honoured to represent the people of Newcastle once again,” McCabe said. “Our city needs real solutions to the housing crisis, better access to healthcare, and decisive action on climate change—areas where the current government has failed to deliver.”

Focus on Housing and Healthcare

One of McCabe’s key priorities is addressing the escalating housing crisis in Newcastle. She proposed an ambitious plan for urban renewal at Broadmeadow, which could see the construction of 20,000 new homes. McCabe advocates for a public property developer to lead the project, ensuring that the housing is affordable and accessible to those who need it most.

“The housing situation in Newcastle is pushing people out of the market. We need a federal approach that prioritises people over profits. By cutting out private developers, we can create homes that are affordable for renters and first home buyers alike,” she explained.

McCabe also highlighted the Greens’ healthcare policy, which promises free GP visits, free healthcare professional appointments, and the establishment of six new Free Local Healthcare Clinics in Newcastle.

“This isn’t just about making healthcare affordable; it’s about ensuring everyone has access to the care they deserve. The Labor government hasn’t delivered on these promises,” McCabe added.

In her speech, McCabe criticised the federal government’s handling of climate policy, citing the approval of 28 coal and gas projects since Labor came to power. She called for a halt to further coal and gas expansion, warning that such projects exacerbate climate disasters like floods and heatwaves, which have heavily impacted communities across Newcastle.

“Labor came to power promising to end the climate wars, but they’ve done the opposite,” McCabe said. “The expansion of coal mines, especially in our region, is not the answer. We need to stop adding fuel to the fire.”

Senator Mehreen Faruqi echoed McCabe’s sentiments, praising her commitment to the environment and social justice. “Charlotte McCabe has been a tireless advocate for Newcastle. She is exactly the kind of representative we need in Canberra to fight for real change,” Senator Faruqi said.
