crews have been called out to battle fires at nearly the same location at Lake Macquarie, three times in as many days, raising concerns among residents and authorities.
The series of incidents began early on Saturday, 12 October 2024, at 3:15 am when Wallarah Rural Fire Brigade crews were dispatched to a bushfire off the Old Pacific Highway, east of the Murray’s Beach interchange. Eleven members from Wallarah responded with two Category 1 tankers, a Category 7, and a Category 6 appliance. Upon arrival, they discovered two small fires lit on either side of a bush track. Hose lines were deployed, and the fires were quickly extinguished and blacked out. Lake Munmorah Rural Fire Brigade and Fire and Rescue Swansea were also alerted but were not required due to the manageable size of the fires.
Later that same day at 6:15 pm, Wallarah crews were summoned again to almost the exact location, this time for a vehicle that had been dumped and set alight. The firefighters swiftly extinguished the burning vehicle and a small area of surrounding vegetation.
The following afternoon on Sunday, 13 October 2024, the brigade responded to yet another vehicle fire on the Pacific Highway southbound, just before the Murray’s Beach exit. Both Wallarah 1 Alpha and 1 Bravo units, along with the Category 6 appliance, attended the scene. Fire and Rescue NSW Station 447 Swansea also assisted. Both occupants of the vehicle escaped without injury, and crews promptly extinguished the blaze and secured the area.
Local residents have expressed their gratitude and concern over the recurring incidents. Natalie Michelle commented, “What is going on? What’s wrong with people? Thanks guys, you are amazing. Here’s to a peaceful Sunday for you all.” Similarly, Michelle Strang praised the efforts of the firefighters, saying, “Thank you Wallarah Fire Brigade! Are the police investigating?” The Wallarah Rural Fire Brigade confirmed that authorities have been notified and will conduct investigations into the incidents.
Community member Kathy Broomhall applauded the dedication of the volunteers: “You guys are amazing—turning out at all hours so the rest of us feel safe, and I thank you.” Jill Blenkey echoed this sentiment, stating, “Thank you Wallarah—it’s a huge commitment from all the crew.”
The repeated nature of these fires in such a short span and at nearly the same location has raised alarms. The Wallarah Rural Fire Brigade has urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the police.
“Three days in a row of incidents like these take a toll on our volunteers who continue to give up their time,” a spokesperson for the brigade said. “We appreciate the community’s support and urge everyone to stay safe.”
Authorities are currently investigating the causes of the fires, and anyone with information is encouraged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
