Sydney Roosters coach Trent Robinson and his wife Sandra are recuperating at home after being injured in a gas explosion at a Hunter Valley property earlier this week.

The incident unfolded on Monday night, 7 October, while the couple were preparing dinner at the rural estate of former ARL chief John Quayle near Denman. After noticing a gas odour following their meal, Trent went to investigate. When he adjusted the gas knob on the barbecue, it ignited, resulting in an explosion that caused burns to both their arms.

Emergency services were promptly called, with NSW Ambulance paramedics and the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service arriving swiftly at the secluded location. The Robinsons received immediate treatment from paramedics and the helicopter’s critical care medical team before being airlifted to John Hunter Hospital in Newcastle.

Sandra was discharged after an overnight stay, while Trent remained under observation for an additional night as a precaution to monitor potential effects on his lungs.

John Quayle, who was present along with his wife but was unharmed, expressed gratitude for the rapid response of the emergency teams. “We’re in a pretty secluded area, and the ambulances came straight away,” Quayle said. “Trent checked the knob, it ignited, and it went off. They are both okay, and that’s the most important thing.”

The Sydney Roosters have yet to release an official statement regarding the incident.

Trent Robinson, 47, has been coaching the Roosters since 2013 and has led the club to three NRL premierships in 2013, 2018, and 2019. He maintains strong ties to the Hunter region, frequently collaborating with local organisations like the Mark Hughes Foundation to support community initiatives.

The couple are now focusing on their recovery at their Sydney home.
