Fishing enthusiasts are in for a thrill this November with the return of the popular Let’s Fish Lake Mac event, offering a $100,000 prize pool across multiple categories. The event, set to take place on the weekend of 23-24 November 2024, introduces a high-stakes twist, with four tagged fish in the lake, each carrying a $25,000 reward for the lucky angler who reels them in.

Among the tagged species are flathead, bream, tailor, and whiting, with one from each species set to be released into the waters just before the competition. Event organiser Michael Guest believes the big prize will boost participation.

“We’ve seen similar concepts work wonders in fishing competitions across Australia, but this is the first time we’re offering it here in Lake Macquarie,” said Guest. “It’s exciting, and it gives anglers an extra reason to get out there and test their skills.”

Aside from the tagged fish, participants will compete for more than $34,000 in prizes, which include fishing gear and tackle. Categories are open for juniors and adults, with awards for the largest fish caught from each of the four target species. Additional ‘mystery length’ prizes will be given away, offering something for everyone, regardless of their catch.

Fish must be caught, photographed on a supplied measuring mat, and then released back into the lake.

Local businesses are also expected to benefit from the influx of visitors, with Lake Macquarie City Council’s Coordinator of Cultural Engagement, Marketing, and Tourism, Marsha Rodrom, noting the positive impact of the event.

“We always see a significant increase in demand for local accommodation and hospitality venues over the Let’s Fish weekend,” Rodrom said. “It’s a fantastic opportunity for visitors to experience the natural beauty of the lake and the community around it.”

Registration for Let’s Fish Lake Mac 2024 costs $30, and all interested anglers can sign up through the official website.
