A dramatic police chase through Cardiff on Friday afternoon, 13 September 2024, has left multiple vehicles damaged as a black Chrysler panel van attempted to evade officers. The chase, which unfolded near Woolworths and Cardiff RSL, caused alarm among local residents as the vehicle sped through car parks and crossed into oncoming traffic.

The incident began just after 1:30pm when officers from Lake Macquarie Police District attempted to stop the black Chrysler panel van in a Cardiff car park. The driver allegedly hit several parked vehicles and a boom gate before speeding off. Police attempted to stop the vehicle on Main Road, Cardiff, but the driver failed to comply, prompting officers to initiate a pursuit. However, the pursuit was terminated shortly after due to safety concerns.

Witnesses at the scene reported chaos, with Sonia Bailey saying her husband’s vehicle was sideswiped in the Woolworths car park. “He is okay, but a bit shaken up. Apparently, they hit a few cars there,” she said. Another resident, Michelle Connop, described a close call near Cardiff RSL, stating, “I almost got hit coming out from Cardiff RSL. The car crossed the wrong side of the road as I was about to turn.”

Police attempted to stop the vehicle again near Warners Bay, initiating a second pursuit, but it too was terminated due to safety concerns. Not long after, officers received reports of a man acting suspiciously in the Speers Point area. With assistance from the Dog Squad, police arrested a 25-year-old man.

The man was taken to Toronto Police Station, where he is currently assisting police with inquiries. The black Chrysler panel van has been seized for forensic examination, and investigations are ongoing.

The incident has raised concerns for residents, especially parents, as it occurred just before school was about to let out for the day. “Hope they get him soon. It’s only 40 minutes until schools are out,” commented Dominique Martin, reflecting the community’s unease.

This story will be updated as further details emerge.
