Attempted Robbery in Newcastle, Man Charged

newy.com.au – An alleged carjacker armed with a syringe was arrested after a quick-thinking Porsche owner locked him inside the luxury SUV and called police from a safe distance.

The incident unfolded around 7:30 am on Friday, 8 November, on Perkins Street in Newcastle. The owner of a black Porsche SUV was approached by an unknown 25-year-old man while standing near his vehicle. The assailant allegedly demanded the keys, brandishing a syringe as a weapon.

Refusing to hand over the keys, the Porsche owner moved away from the car. The assailant then entered the driver’s seat and attempted to start the vehicle. However, he was thwarted when the owner, still holding the keys, remotely locked the doors, trapping the man inside.

From a safe spot on the street, the owner contacted emergency services. Newcastle police quickly arrived at the scene, where a brief struggle ensued before the man was safely taken into custody.

Further investigations revealed that the same individual had allegedly attempted to enter a woman’s vehicle just moments before confronting the Porsche owner. A search of his possessions uncovered a quantity of methamphetamine, along with ID and bank cards suspected to be stolen.

The 25-year-old was transported to Newcastle Police Station and charged with seven offences:

1. Aggravated assault with intent to take or drive a motor vehicle while armed with a weapon
2. Stalking or intimidation
3. Entering a vehicle without consent
4. Assaulting a police officer
5. Resisting or hindering police
6. Possessing goods suspected of being stolen
7. Possessing a prohibited drug

Bail was formally refused, and the man faced an out-of-sessions hearing at Parramatta Local Court on 9 November, where he was remanded in custody. He is scheduled to appear in Newcastle Local Court later this month.
