The Junction Soldiers War Memorial in Newcastle is set to receive significant funding from the NSW Government, being one of 15 recipients across the state awarded grants from Round 1 of the 2024/25 Community War Memorials Fund.
Minister for Veterans David Harris announced the grants aimed at supporting war memorials in communities across New South Wales. The Junction Soldiers War Memorial will receive $14,300 to conduct a condition assessment and develop a remediation repair plan. Due to its deteriorated state and previous inadequate repairs, the memorial requires specialist attention to restore its former glory.
Located at “The Junction,” a historic convergence point where tram tracks once met, the memorial holds a special place in Newcastle’s heritage. In the early 20th century, this area was a bustling hub, serving as the central interchange for tram lines connecting various parts of the city. The war memorial, erected after World War I, stands as a tribute to local soldiers who served and sacrificed during the Great War. Its position at this significant intersection symbolises the unity and collective remembrance of the community.
In addition to the funding news, Transport for NSW has announced that veterans and serving Australian Defence Force personnel will receive free public transport on Remembrance Day, 11 November. Those in uniform, wearing their medals, or carrying proof of military service can travel for free on all train, bus, light rail, and ferry services. Veterans’ families and carers are also eligible for free travel if they meet certain criteria.
Transport for NSW Coordinator General Howard Collins said it’s a small gesture to honour those who have served. “Eligible passengers will not need to tap on or off with their Opal cards or contactless payment devices,” Mr Collins stated. “Transport staff will facilitate free boarding or open the gates at gated stations.”
State Member for Newcastle, Tim Crakanthorp MP, welcomed the funding and encouraged community groups and ex-service organisations to assess local war memorials. “This grant will help ensure that The Junction Soldiers War Memorial can continue to stand proud in our community as a reminder of the contributions made to our nation and its military history,” he said.
As Remembrance Day approaches, bell towers across the state will ring at 11 am, and a minute of silence will be observed to honour the service and sacrifice of veterans. The community is encouraged to participate in local commemorative events and take a moment to reflect on Australia’s military history.
