newy.com.au – A BP service station in Wallsend has ignited community outrage after multiple residents alleged that they observed drug-related paraphernalia in a prominent position on top of a food cabinet, including bongs and amphetamine pipes, openly displayed for sale at the store. Local families have raised concerns over the visibility of these items, stating that they are in full view of children and general shoppers who enter the service station, situated on a main road frequented by families and students.
BP Australia responded to the allegations, clarifying that the Wallsend station operates independently as a third-party franchise, stating, “BP does not condone the sale or promotion of these implements.” The company clarified that while the station carries BP’s branding, it is independently managed and owned.
A major pie brand, whose branding appeared in the photo, similarly distanced itself from the controversy. A spokesperson explained to Newy 87.8 on the phone, “They are just a reseller of our products, just like they resell well-known soft drink brands and other items.”
Community sentiment has been one of strong disapproval, with local residents frustrated over what they see as the normalisation of drug-related items in everyday spaces. One resident shared, “We’re not happy. These items shouldn’t be so readily available, especially in a place where children walk in to buy a snack.”
Under Section 11A of the Drug Misuse and Trafficking Act 1985 (NSW), it is illegal to sell or display drug-related implements, such as water pipes (commonly known as bongs) and ice pipes, in New South Wales. The law states: “A person who sells, supplies, or displays a water pipe or ice pipe in connection with a commercial transaction is guilty of an offence.” Penalties for this offence include up to two years’ imprisonment and fines reaching $2,200.
The alleged incident has been reported to Crime Stoppers by multiple residents, and NSW Police are currently investigating the matter and the items have since been taken down. Newy 87.8 has requested an official statement and will update our readers on social media once their investigations have been completed.
The harm caused by drugs like methamphetamine and cannabis extends beyond the individual, straining emergency services, healthcare systems, and social support networks. Methamphetamine, especially, is linked to severe health issues such as psychosis, violence, and dependency, while prolonged cannabis use can impair memory, mental health, and motivation and can also trigger psychosis, paranoia, anxiety, memory impairment, depression, mood swings, poor work performance, social isolation, mental disorders, and impaired decision-making.
The sale of drug-related implements at such a public and family-centric location is seen by many as a step backward in the fight against substance abuse.
