newy.com.au – A 65-year-old man’s drivers licence has been suspended as police continue investigating an alleged fail to stop crash at Nelson Bay that killed a dog earlier this week.

NSW Police said the vehicle was found in Anna Bay after an off-duty officer spotted it at a mechanic, with damage alleged to be consistent with the crash.

Police allege a 71-year-old man was walking his dog on Stockton Street, near the roundabout at Church Street, just before 9am on Tuesday 13 January 2026 when he attempted to cross the road.

CCTV shows the man pausing briefly at a pedestrian traffic island in the middle of the road before continuing to cross.

A vehicle entered the roundabout and allegedly clipped the man before striking the man’s dog, eight-year-old Lulu, killing her instantly.

When the driver allegedly failed to stop, officers attached to Port Stephens-Hunter Police District were notified and began inquiries.

The vehicle was then seized after police identified damage they say is consistent with the incident.

About 12.15pm on Thursday 15 January 2026, police attended a home in Anna Bay and spoke with a 65-year-old man then suspended his driver licence. Police said traffic enforcement action would be taken.
