newy.com.au – Two remarkable women from Newcastle have been named among the finalists in the prestigious NSW Women of the Year Awards 2025, recognising their outstanding contributions to their communities and fields. Mariam Mohammed and Ennia Jones stand as local inspirations, representing Newcastle on the state stage.

The awards, now in their 13th year, celebrate extraordinary women across New South Wales who are making a difference in various sectors. With over 500 nominations received, a record-breaking response, the 2025 finalists reflect the strength, dedication, and leadership of women throughout the state.

Mariam Mohammed has been nominated in the NSW Premier’s Woman of Excellence category. Known for her groundbreaking work in social advocacy and leadership, Mohammed has played a pivotal role in championing women’s economic empowerment and financial literacy. As a co-founder of financial education initiatives aimed at helping young women and marginalised communities, she has built a platform that fosters inclusivity and strength. Her recognition highlights the importance of financial independence in achieving gender equality.

Meanwhile, Ennia Jones is a finalist for NSW Community Hero, an award that honours individuals who have made significant contributions at the grassroots level. Jones is deeply involved in community initiatives, dedicating her time to supporting vulnerable groups and advocating for social justice. Her work has touched the lives of many in Newcastle, particularly in areas of housing support, mental health advocacy, and grassroots activism.

Premier Chris Minns praised the finalists, stating that they exemplify the exceptional talent and dedication of women across NSW. “From doctors, academics and scientists to community leaders and advocates – each and every one of our finalists have gone above and beyond in their respective fields,” he said.

Minister for Women Jodie Harrison echoed the sentiment, highlighting the record number of nominations as a testament to the vital role women play in all aspects of society. “This year’s group come from all walks of life, from scientists and researchers to entrepreneurs and strong advocates to stop domestic and family violence,” she said.

The winners will be announced at the NSW Women of the Year Awards 2025 ceremony at the International Convention Centre in Sydney. The event is part of NSW Women’s Week, running from 2 March to 8 March, and was livestreamed to allow communities across the state to celebrate the achievements of these inspiring women.

Both Mohammed and Jones have already made a lasting impact, proving that Newcastle women are at the forefront of driving change in New South Wales.
