newy.com.au – Lake Macquarie City Council is encouraging residents and community groups to participate in Clean Up Australia Day on Sunday, 2 March 2025, by registering a clean-up site. Last year, over 9,000 volunteers collected seven tonnes of rubbish across 104 sites in the area.
The Everingham family from Teralba, including Scott, Elle, and their four-year-old son Toby, are enthusiastic participants. Scott Everingham stated, “We take part in this to send a positive message to keep our city beautiful – we have a passion for it.” Their group plans to clean up around the Teralba Tennis Courts, focusing on the nearby field and shared pathway.
Mayor Adam Shultz is urging locals to get involved, either individually or by forming groups to register clean-up sites. He highlighted the diverse efforts in previous years, including scuba divers cleaning Swansea Channel and kayakers tidying creeks. “By everyone doing their bit, we can have a meaningful impact. Let’s all commit to better recycling practices and responsible waste disposal to keep our stunning landscape clean and thriving all year long,” he said.
Clean Up Australia Day, initiated in 1990 by Australian sailor Ian Kiernan, has grown into the nation’s largest community-based environmental event. Over the past three decades, more than 22 million Australians have participated, dedicating over 38.5 million volunteer hours to environmental conservation.
In 2024, the event saw over 750,000 volunteers across more than 10,000 sites nationwide, demonstrating a strong community commitment to environmental stewardship.
