Background

The City of Newcastle is continuing to enhancince urban green spaces, with plans to transform a seldom-used part of National Park into a vibrant recreational area. The northwest corner of Newcastle’s largest recreational reserve is set to feature new shaded picnic tables, public amenities, and additional tree plantings, all aimed at creating a more inviting space for locals and visitors.

Community members are encouraged to share their thoughts on the draft plan, which outlines several proposed improvements. The vision for this corner of National Park includes grassed areas for relaxation, shaded seating options, bike racks, and drinking fountains. A new footpath will also connect Smith Street to Parry Street and the nearby basketball courts, enhancing accessibility for both pedestrians and cyclists.

A key component of the redevelopment is the removal of the long-vacant Wal Young House. The building, which has fallen into disrepair, will be demolished to make way for a more welcoming and usable environment. The land will be remediated and re-turfed, seamlessly integrating it into the existing park landscape.

Lynn Duffy, City of Newcastle’s Executive Manager for Community and Recreation, highlighted the significance of this project. “National Park is an essential green space in the heart of the city that is valued by the community for passive and active recreation,” Ms Duffy said. “The remediation of the Wal Young House site will provide safe public access to this corner of the park, opening up new opportunities for informal activities and adding much-needed amenities.”

Ms Duffy also said the broader impact of the project, noting that the improvements would create a safer and more welcoming environment, complementing existing sporting and recreational facilities. “The proposed upgrades will be a valuable addition to what is already on offer in the park precinct,” she added.

Demolition of the derelict building is slated to begin this month. The project will also pave the way for future enhancements, such as traffic management upgrades and improved pedestrian and cyclist connectivity at the busy National Park and Parry Street intersection.

Residents are invited to review and provide feedback on the draft plan, shaping the future of one of Newcastle’s most cherished green spaces.
