In the early hours of Sunday morning, 3 November 2024, emergency services were called to the M1 motorway, 2 kilometres north of the Palmers Road off-ramp in Wakefield, following a serious collision involving two vehicles.
Officers from Lake Macquarie Police District arrived at the scene to find a Mitsubishi Mirage and a Holden Commodore had collided head-on. The driver of the Mirage, a 19-year-old woman, was trapped in her vehicle and required extensive efforts to be freed by emergency responders.
Once released from the wreckage, she received immediate medical attention from NSW Ambulance paramedics before being transported to John Hunter Hospital. She remains in critical condition.
The driver of the Holden Commodore, a 41-year-old woman, was assessed at the scene but declined medical treatment.
Police have since established a crime scene, and investigations into the circumstances of the crash are ongoing. Authorities are urging anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has dashcam footage to come forward and assist with the inquiry.
