City of Newcastle have endorsed the construction of a new cycleway and shared path along Chinchen and Hubbard Streets in Islington. The project follows extensive community consultation, with strong support voiced for the 665-metre connection that will link Mayfield’s Scholey Street rail bridge to Islington Park and the Newcastle city centre.
The planned route will integrate seamlessly with existing cycling infrastructure, offering a protected and continuous pathway featuring both on-road cycle lanes and off-road shared spaces. Ryan Tranter, Executive Manager for Transport and Regulation at City of Newcastle, highlighted the enthusiastic community feedback received.
“Our commitment to active transport is about making walking and cycling a safe, convenient, and appealing choice,” Mr Tranter said. “It’s fantastic to see over 90 percent of respondents backing the proposal, demonstrating just how valuable this connection will be for our residents.”
Mr Tranter highlighted the importance of the project for local institutions. “With parents, students, and staff from Islington Public School and Tighes Hill TAFE relying on active transport, this infrastructure will accommodate all users, regardless of confidence or ability,” he added.
Key features of the Islington Cycleway include:
Construction is set to commence early next year, with funding of $950,000 provided through Transport for NSW’s Get NSW Active initiative. This investment in Islington is part of a broader effort by City of Newcastle to implement its ‘On Our Bikes’ Cycling Plan, which envisions connecting the city’s western suburbs to the CBD.
The cycleway is expected to complement recent infrastructure improvements, including last year’s $800,000 upgrade to the Chinchen and Clyde Street intersection. That project introduced new traffic signals to enhance safety for pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists alike.
