newy.com.au – Councils and tourism leaders from across NSW have used a major conference in Maitland to strengthen a coordinated push to grow the state’s visitor economy and create new opportunities for local communities.
The 2026 LGNSW Destination and Visitor Economy Conference wrapped up this week after bringing council representatives, tourism bodies and industry leaders together to examine how local government can help drive economic growth, support jobs and build more resilient communities through tourism.
Local Government NSW president Mayor Darcy Byrne said the conference had highlighted the importance of local leadership in developing the visitor economy.
“Tourism helps build stronger, more resilient communities. This conference has shown the value of local leadership in turning ambition into action and creating lasting opportunities for communities across the state,” Mayor Byrne said.
“I thank Maitland City Council and their Mayor, Cr Philip Penfold, for their warm hospitality.
“I also thank the Member for Maitland, NSW Minister for Roads and Regional Transport, the Hon Jenny Aitchison MP, for her attendance and support for our conference.”
The program included panel discussions, workshops and site visits covering emerging trends, practical tools for councils, global marketing strategies and policy issues shaping the sector. Delegates also considered how council-owned assets could be used to improve visitor experiences, as well as how new and upgraded airport infrastructure could support future tourism growth.
The conference also featured the announcement of the NSW Top Tourism Town Awards, hosted by the NSW Tourism Association and presented by its chair, the Hon Stuart Ayres. The awards recognise councils and communities that have helped create memorable visitor experiences.
Planning is already under way for the 2027 LGNSW Destination and Visitor Economy Conference, which will be hosted by the City of Coffs Harbour on the Coffs Coast.
