newy.com.au – A 23-year-old man has been charged after an alleged armed robbery at a Rutherford service station in which an employee was threatened with a knife.

Emergency services were called about 5.30am on Wednesday, May 27, to the service station on the New England Highway, following reports of an armed robbery near Maitland.

Police were told a man allegedly threatened an employee with a knife before leaving the scene with cash. Officers from the Port Stephens-Hunter Police District attended and began inquiries.

About 11.40am the same day, police arrested a 23-year-old man at a home on Garwood Street, Rutherford. During a search of the property, police allegedly found and seized cash and a knife.

The man was taken to Maitland Police Station and charged with robbery armed with an offensive weapon. He was refused bail to appear before Bail Division Court 2 on Thursday, where he was formally refused bail to appear before Newcastle Local Court on Wednesday, July 22.
