newy.com.au – An $810,000 upgrade of Kurri Kurri Fire Station has been completed, delivering improved facilities for firefighters as part of a wider $12 million NSW Government investment in firefighting services across the Hunter and Central Coast.

The Fire and Rescue NSW station works were designed to bring existing arrangements up to required standards and support the clean area principle, with dedicated male and female locker rooms and separate toilet and shower facilities among the key changes.

The project also included relocating the existing watch room, adding an office desk and larger floor area, building a new Personal Protective Clothing room and moving the gym to an external demountable block at the rear of the yard to create more internal space. The station has also been repainted inside and out, fitted with new floor coverings and received electrical and mechanical services upgrades.

The Kurri Kurri works follow recent improvements at Fire and Rescue NSW stations at Bateau Bay, Umina and Morisset, including new changeroom facilities and better contamination management.

Emergency Services Minister Jihad Dib said the investment was part of a broader effort to strengthen local firefighting capacity.

“I am proud of our Government’s ongoing commitment to improving firefighting resources by investing more than $12 million to protect communities from the Central Coast to the Hunter,” Mr Dib said.

State Member for the Electorate of Cessnock Clayton Barr said the changes would provide better facilities for firefighters working from the station.

“The changes to the station will mean our male and female firefighters have dedicated areas that provide privacy,” Mr Barr said.

“I am proud to be part of a Government that has made considerable investment to ensuring our brave and selfless firefighters are better equipped to protect our communities across the region.

“It is fantastic to see this investment in the Kurri Kurri Fire Station; these upgrades are much needed and will provide a positive and inclusive environment and hopefully encourage more people to join our emergency services.”
