newy.com.au – Newcastle will receive $5 million in federal funding to help replace the ageing Hunter Street bridge over Cottage Creek in the CBD, with the money to go towards a $21 million project aimed at improving flood resilience and traffic flow.

The more than 120-year-old bridge plays an important role in flood management and in traffic movement in and out of the city centre. The funding will support the design and replacement of the bridge, along with the relocation of multiple utility services running through and beneath it.

The project is being backed under the Albanese Government’s Safer Local Roads and Infrastructure Program, with the latest funding tranche delivering more than $107 million for 42 projects nationwide, including more than $91 million earmarked for projects in regional Australia.

Federal Member for Newcastle Sharon Claydon said: “The Hunter Street Bridge over Cottage Creek has served our city for more than 120 years, but it’s time to plan for its future.”

She said: “This $5 million investment, towards the $21 million project cost, will support critical work to replace the bridge and improve flood resilience and traffic flow in our CBD.”

City of Newcastle Alternate Deputy Lord Mayor Declan Clausen said the funding would help deliver a major infrastructure project for the city. “This funding is a strong example of local and federal governments working together to deliver for Newcastle,” he said.
