newy.com.au – Maitland City Council has introduced a new outdoor dining policy aimed at making it easier for local hospitality businesses to set up or expand outdoor dining areas.
The policy follows the end of Service NSW’s state-led Outdoor Dining Trial and Program and brings in a new permit system through MyCouncil. Council said the changes were designed to reduce red tape and speed up approvals while keeping public spaces safe, accessible and welcoming.
As part of the rollout, Council will waive the one-off $145 application fee for the next six months for businesses applying to use outdoor dining.
Maitland Mayor Philip Penfold said the new policy would help businesses expand their footprint and cater to more customers, particularly in warmer months.
“Outdoor dining adds life to our streets and gives the community more opportunities to enjoy our cafes, restaurants and bars,” Mayor Penfold said.
“Businesses can now set up outdoor dining more easily, while Council ensures public spaces remain safe and accessible for everyone.”
Director City Planning Trevor Ryan said the policy aligned with recent NSW Government Vibrancy Reforms and gave businesses a clear framework to work within.
“This approach supports local hospitality and will help create more vibrant and liveable precincts across Maitland,” Mr Ryan said.
The policy sets out requirements covering public liability insurance, pedestrian access and liquor licensing where relevant. Council said it was one of a number of initiatives being rolled out under Maitland’s new Economic Development Strategy.
Businesses can find more information about the policy and apply for a permit through Maitland City Council’s website.
