newy.com.au – EnergyCo has opened registrations for companies seeking to design and build an open-air storage area at the proposed Newcastle Logistics Precinct, a portside hub next to the Port of Newcastle that would store oversize and overmass equipment such as wind turbines and transformers for renewable energy projects across NSW. The online invitation closes on 17 April 2026, with successful registrants to be invited into an expression of interest stage in May.

The precinct is planned for the government-owned Intertrade site at the former BHP steelworks, next to the port, and the NSW Government announced a $115.5 million investment for the project in the 2025-26 Budget. EnergyCo says the development is intended to expand portside storage and strengthen the supply chain between the Port of Newcastle and renewable energy zones across the state.

The project remains subject to planning and environmental approvals. EnergyCo says an environmental impact statement and public exhibition are due later this year, the procurement process will run through 2026, and the formal request for tender stage is expected to begin in early 2027. On its project page, the agency says construction is expected to begin in 2027 and initial operations in 2028.

EnergyCo Executive Director of Project Interface and Strategic Coordination Azaria Dobson said: “Our early market engagement has informed how we package delivery of the Newcastle Logistics Precinct and we are expecting strong interest.” Ms Dobson said an industry briefing in August 2026 would connect smaller regional construction businesses with shortlisted tenderers, adding: “The industry briefing later in 2026 will help companies across the Hunter Region learn about the Newcastle Logistics Precinct, make valuable connections and explore ways to get involved.”
