newy.com.au – Maitland City Council has announced a program of free and low-cost events for Youth Week 2026, inviting young people aged 12 to 24 to take part in activities across the city from 16 to 26 April.
The annual NSW event celebrates the achievements and ideas of young people and aims to create opportunities for them to connect with their community. This year’s theme, ‘Dream. Dare. Do’, encourages young people to try new experiences and play an active role in city life.
Council’s program will be held at venues including Maitland Regional Art Gallery, Maitland Aquatic Centre and Maitland libraries, with activities ranging from live music and creative workshops to outdoor adventures and skill-building sessions such as cybersecurity challenges and lifeguard courses.
Maitland Mayor Philip Penfold said, “Youth Week is an important opportunity to recognise the role young people play in shaping the future of the city – a connected and thriving Maitland.
“Maitland’s population is growing and changing, with more young people moving to the area alongside an ageing population, and it’s vital we provide spaces and opportunities where everyone can engage, participate and thrive.
“This week is all about recognising youth as active contributors to the city we all share.”
Among the featured events are the Maitland Aquatics Winter Launch on 16 April, with free pool entry, a free sausage sizzle, hot chocolates and family activities including laser tag, an Easter egg hunt, aqua fitness and learn to swim classes; Youth Week Live at Maitland Regional Art Gallery on 17 April, with performances by school musicians and local bands alongside free pizza; and Burton Automotive Hunter Valley Steamfest on 18 and 19 April, where young people can enjoy trains, live music, roving performances and market stalls, as well as meet councillors at Council’s engagement tent.
Councillor Ben Worth said, “Youth Week is about empowering young people to get involved in their community and share ideas on issues that matter most to them.
“This year’s program offers a mix of creative, educational and recreational activities, from live music and art workshops to community events, giving young people practical ways to connect and be recognised for their contributions to Maitland.”
More information and the full Youth Week 2026 program are available through Maitland City Council.
