newy.com.au – Construction has commenced on the University of Newcastle’s New Energy Skills Hub, a purpose-built $20 million facility aimed at developing the workforce needed for the Hunter’s transition to a new energy economy.

The university said the hub would provide hands-on training for students from the university, TAFE and other training providers, with access to specialist equipment and direct industry exposure to help prepare graduates for jobs in emerging energy industries. The 905sqm building will include an open-plan workshop area and specialised equipment across five dedicated zones for education, training, testing and demonstration.

The facility will also operate as a testbed for industry, allowing systems and components to be tested and refined in a range of environments. It is funded by a $16 million Australian Government investment under the Priority Community Infrastructure Program, with the University of Newcastle contributing $4 million towards construction and delivery.

Federal member for Newcastle Sharon Claydon said the project would help position the region for future jobs as the energy sector changed. “For generations, Newcastle and the Hunter have powered Australia’s economy. With the right investment in skills, research and innovation, we can continue powering the nation long into the future.”

Acting Vice-Chancellor Professor Belinda Tynan said the hub would focus on practical, industry-ready training as the region moved towards a carbon-neutral future. The project is the first step in the development of the university’s Next Generation Resources Park, an expansion of its industrial innovation precinct.

Professor Alan Broadfoot, who will oversee the project, said the hub would support students across tertiary and vocational education, secondary schools and industry. Courses and training opportunities are set to include short courses and micro-credentials, competency and technical development accreditation, embedded learning pathways across VET, undergraduate and postgraduate study, bespoke industrial and commercial courses, market-driven STEM pathways and industry placements.

Grindley Construction has been appointed to deliver the main construction works, with the project expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2027.
