newy.com.au – Four public high schools from the Hunter region have been named among NSW’s most improved for 2025 Higher School Certificate results, with Hunter River High School, Hunter Sports High School, Lake Macquarie High School and Maitland High School all recognised by the state government. Hunter Sports High School was recognised for the second year in a row.
The Hunter schools were among 45 public high schools across NSW to receive letters of congratulations from Deputy Premier and Education Minister Prue Car and NSW Department of Education Secretary Murat Dizdar on Monday. This year’s tally almost doubled the number of schools honoured for their 2024 HSC results.
The schools were identified from 452 public high schools that each year guide an estimated 40,000 Year 12 students through the HSC. They were recognised for consistent growth over seven years, lifting the number of students achieving higher bands and showing strong progress across other bands.
Ms Car said, “These results show what can be achieved when teachers can focus their time and expertise in the classroom, providing high-impact teaching for their students.” Mr Dizdar said, “These schools are proof that great teaching changes lives. They are quietly and consistently turning potential into achievement – and that’s a story that deserves to be shared.”
Other nearby schools on the regional and rural list were Brisbane Water Secondary College, Woy Woy Campus, Kincumber High School, Lisarow High School and Tuggerah Lakes Secondary College, The Entrance Campus. The broader regional and rural group also included schools from Kempsey, Maclean, Orange, Wingham, Wauchope, Coolamon, Evans River, Nimbin, Yass and Finigan School of Distance Education, while 27 metropolitan schools were also recognised.
