newy.com.au – Police have warned the public about stealing and fraud offences targeting elderly people after reports across Newcastle and several Sydney-area commands, with some victims losing hundreds of dollars.
Incidents have been reported in Newcastle City Police District, Kuring Gai Police Area Command, Northern Beaches Police Area Command, The Hills Police Area Command and Hawkesbury Police Area Command.
Investigators have been told elderly victims are being approached by unknown people who claim the victim has dropped a wallet or cash. While the person is distracted, their wallet is allegedly taken and their cards are later used fraudulently.
Police said one of the incidents occurred about 4pm on Monday, 9 March 2026, in the car park of a shopping centre on Minmi Road at Fletcher.
Officers from Newcastle City Police District were told an 81-year-old man had entered his vehicle when he was approached by an unknown man who claimed he had dropped money and wanted to return it.
Police said the man forced his way into the vehicle, before the 81-year-old pushed him out. The man then left the area.
The 81-year-old later discovered his bank card was missing. Police allege it was later used at a service station in Elermore Vale, where $800 was withdrawn.
Inquiries are continuing and police are urging anyone who may have been the victim of a similar incident to report it to their local police station or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
