newy.com.au – Construction has begun on a new 64-bed Maitland Mental Health Rehabilitation facility at the Maitland Hospital campus at Metford, in a project the Minns Labor Government says will expand access to specialised mental health care in the Hunter.

The purpose-built facility will provide specialist rehabilitation and forensic mental health services for adults and will be integrated with other health services on the campus. It is set to include single bedrooms with private ensuites, light-filled courtyards, communal living areas, sensory rooms, indoor and outdoor therapy spaces, skylights, large windows, therapeutic gardens and walking paths.

Construction is expected to be completed in 2028. Once finished, several health services now based at Morisset Hospital will relocate to the new Maitland facility.

The project forms part of the NSW Government’s $700 million Statewide Mental Health Infrastructure Program, aimed at increasing the number of mental health inpatient beds across the state, including in regional centres such as Tamworth, Broken Hill and Maitland.

Member for Maitland Jenny Aitchison said the start of works marked an important step for the region.

“This is a huge milestone for Maitland and the wider Hunter, and it’s fantastic to see construction now underway on this important new mental health facility.

“Over the coming months our community will see this modern, purpose-built centre take shape – delivering the specialised care and support people need closer to home.

“This new facility will provide a safe, therapeutic and contemporary environment designed to support recovery and rehabilitation for people living with mental illness.

“The Minns Labor Government is investing in the infrastructure our regions deserve, ensuring people across the Hunter can access high-quality mental health care in a setting that supports their recovery and wellbeing.”

Hunter New England Mental Health Services executive director Dr Anand Swamy said staff were preparing for the move into the new building.

“Our staff are looking forward to relocating to these new, purpose-built facilities, and we are looking forward to working with the building team as the project starts to take shape.”
